This August, Raconteur Theatre Company will share two tales of love with a little circus twist in Jacob M. Appel's comedy Arborophilia.
Judge Gwendolyn Gage (Krista Threadgill) is displeased with both of her daughters' choices of mates. The older daughter, Lily (Mary-Aileen St. Cyr) is involved in an unacceptable engagement with a Republican (Dale DeWood) while Laurel (Alexis Moberger) is mixed up in an unrequited infatuation with a poplar tree. Against his nature, garden-shop owner Jimmy Duckfoot (Rudy Frias) develops great hatred for the poplar as his love for Laurel grows. An additional snag is pulled when the very rich and influential Dame Lucretia (Anne Grove) decides the poplar must be cut down for the sake of her next business venture.
"Not only does Appel manage to tease everyone from leftie liberals to ticked off tea-baggers and all species in between," director Daniele Mari says, "but underneath the wackiness his smart script deftly satirizes the absurdity coloring our cultural assumptions about gender, love, race, money, and of course... tree hugging."
Among all these knots and tangles, Raconteur will also tie in aerial silks with the help of Eoin O'Brien, director of the Dr. Danga Grimaldi Circus in Columbus, and aerial artist Kyra Wagner.
